New Zealand is a country in the South Pacific. 4,027,947 people lived in New Zealand at the time of the 2006 Census. The capital of New Zealand is Wellington.
It consists of two large islands - North & South Island and numerous smaller islands. Wellington the capital is in the north island. Climate wise they are quite different. The north is warmer and wetter. The south colder and drier. The south gets a lot of ice and snow whereas in the north only the mountains get snow. Occasionally it does snow till sea level. As it is an island country it has stunning beaches and you are never far away from water.
It is quite isolated (2000 kms from Australia). This has resulted in unique flora and fauna and birds. Agriculture is an important part of the economy. Dairy products are and important export item.
The indigenous people are called Maori and have a rich culture and language. The Government is democratically elected and the Prime Minister is Helen Clark
